East Banqueting House, interior

20230217_180802
This is the interior of the top floor of the East Banqueting House from yesterday's entry. It's all one big room, nicely furnished, but the real attraction of it is the views from all the windows, and the great wooden double doors on the right, which open directly onto the lawn.

You can also zoom in and play a frustrating game of "Spot the Humuhumu". Hint: she isn't next to the tablet, which was abandoned by Keiki when he went to hunt for an apple in the kitchen downstairs.

Not Chipping Sodbury but possibly one of the views worth selling your soul for to a stranger in ill fitting boots and an oddly shaped hat, y/n?

Croome

[These events took place and this entry was written pre-lockdown 3.0.]

The last time we went to Croome, Humuhumu was a toddler and Keiki slept through the whole thing in his sling. The grounds are stunning - it’s a Capability Brown extravaganza, no expense was spared, not even that of moving an entire village to improve a view - and they loved it. I’m still kicking myself for not bringing the dSLR but comfort myself in the knowledge that we’ll definitely be back.

Charlecote Park

For our final walk of the year, we headed out very early this morning to Charlecote Park in Warwickshire. The park supports a large deer population and lots of other wildlife. We started in freezing fog and ended in sunshine with takeaway coffees, hot chocolates, and shortbreads, which was definitely the right way round according to the children.

The Roman Baths in Bath

The excavated Roman Baths in the English town of Bath showcase a fraction of its former magnificence, but still manage to be quite impressive.

IMG_3330
There are people in period costume roaming around during visitor hours. Humuhumu didn't meet this one, but she did meet a chap called Peregrinus, who was a Gaul.

I know I'm not obliged to post every day, but as (a) I don't have the energy to do the big Roman Baths photo post tonight and (b) this picture makes me laaaaaugh, here is a small photo post.

Bath Abbey

I took a small set of very hurried dSLR photos on our visit to Bath Abbey and was mildly disappointed in them. Until I converted them to black and white and discovered that they all appear to be super creepy, which pleases my inner eldergoth greatly.

Family in front of Bath Abbey

20190104_095719
Our trip to Bath was cut short today by the cancellation of a raft of trains on our homeward journey. We managed to escape just in time to miss the brunt of the chaos. Fortunately, we had packed in visits to the Roman Baths and the Abbey (see above), as well as a rather excellent tea at Sally Lunn's Eating House. I even brought my dSLR, so fingers crossed there are some good shots to come.

Day 276/365: Steam Yacht Gondola

Yes, I’ve managed it! The final mammoth photo post installment of our August summer holiday, which is about our trip on the beautifully restored Victorian Steam Yacht Gondola. We stayed in a tipi at the youth hostel not far from the gondola’s launch onto Coniston Water, and so we headed out early one very wet morning to catch it on its first trip out onto the water that day.

Day 269/365: Sizergh Castle

I bring you another mammoth photo post from last month, in which we visited Sizergh Castle, a National Trust property near Kendal in the Lake District. It was a damp drizzly day, but we still managed to enjoy our time in the gardens.

Day 262/365: Biddulph Grange Gardens

On our way up to the Lake District in August, we stopped off at a National Trust property to eat our lunch. We chose Biddulph Grange Gardens, and I’m so glad we did. The gardens were spectacular, even by NT standards, and this ranks as one of our favourites (and the bloke and I have been to a fair few). It was laid out in a tangled nest of paths, some leading to the next garden, others to little cul-de-sacs full of one particular type of flower or tree. Some gardens were very formal and themed, and others scarcely more than a wild tangle of leaves and fronds. It was great fun to explore.

Day 240/365: Lake District holiday: St Bees

We drove up to St Bees during the camping portion of our Lake District holiday and spent a day romping on the beach below the cliffs. We arrived about an hour before low tide, which gave us a chance to enjoy the full extent of the sand before it was swallowed up again by the sea.

Day 235/365: Climbing (outdoors)

[livejournal.com profile] melissa_maples, remember what you were saying about what happens when climbing gyms can no longer contain a natural-born boulderer?

What if you end up spawning two of them? O.O

Day 234/365: Crazy Science and Pottery Painting

Not at the same time.

20180822_092312
Humuhumu and Keiki in their lab coats. Sadly, that cave-like entrance leads to Bella Italia, not the Crazy Scientist lair.

First, the crazy science. Both children participated in this activity, donning white coats and heading into Crazy Scientist Jill's laboratory with quite a few other children. She began with a lesson in polymer strength (!), giving them each a plastic bag of "green alien slime" and having them stick sharpened pencils through it. Some bags leaked straightaway (Keiki's) and others could take multiple pencils without leaking (Humuhumu's), depending on how well the plastic was made. I really liked this demonstration although I suspect it went over my children's heads.

Humuhumu with the bag of alien slime )

The second experiment was making a plastic container full of green bogeys. They started with corn starch, stirred that around a bit, and then added what looked like a scoop of baking soda and alum from a test tube. Jill came by with a kettle of recently boiled water and added that while they had their goggles on. Then she circulated with some "dragon breath" (green food colouring) and dropped that in whilst they continued stirring. Both my children loved this experiment. Keiki in particular, because (a) the resulting bogey mixture was bright green and (b) we got to close up the container and take the bogeys home. Happy days!

Keiki stirring the snot )

The third experiment was the classic making a volcano out of vinegar and baking soda. The children used construction paper and tissues to make a volcano "wrapper" for their plastic beaker of red-coloured vinegar, which the grown-ups helped them to glue on. And finally, everyone poured in the baking soda simultaneously. It was a joyously raucous affair.

+2 )

Jill ended the session by letting each of the children use her time machine, which let them travel the solar system in search of planets and aliens. Humuhumu saw a rainbow alien at Neptune. Keiki was far too overwhelmed at being chosen to take the first trip in the time machine to speak at all, but it was clear he enjoyed it.

Keiki in the time machine )

The time machine was a green circular paddling pool full of bubble mixture and a red hula hoop. Jill directed each child to stand in the middle of the pool and then she drew the hoop up over their heads to make a giant cylindrical bubble that encased them for a few seconds. The session was by this point running well over the scheduled hour, but clearly no one was going to leave before they had their go in it!

In the afternoon, Humuhumu and I went to try our hands at pottery painting. She chose a small mermaid to paint herself, and a dinosaur for me to paint for Keiki, with orders to make sure it ended up green, like Tony from Dinopaws (CBeebies show).

3 painting photos )

We pick up the finished pieces tomorrow afternoon. Fingers crossed they turn out OK.

Day 233/365: Not good at relaxing?

We had "only" two activities planned today, but somehow ended up all being completely zapped by 6 PM.

Humuhumu woke up early, so she and I had a quiet breakfast together and then headed down to one of the adventure playgrounds for a solitary morning play. She climbed everything she could reach, we caught a few Pokémon, and came back to wake the boys up.

We got ourselves dressed up for our professional photo session and went to pick up our hire bicycles. Humuhumu opted for one with stabilisers as she's not yet comfortable riding without them. She gained confidence with the bicycle over the course of the day, but given how hilly this site is, that was the correct choice.

The photographer took an array of photos of the four of us, and we're hopeful from the previews that we'll get some good ones. We have a handful of formal portraits of the children, separately and together, in the intervening time. However, the last time we had family portraits done was three years ago whilst on holiday in Turkey (see below). I'm resolved to get them done every summer from now on.

Family portrait, three years ago
Family portrait in Antalya, Turkey.

We went to a different playground so the children could blow off steam from all that holding still and smiling, followed by ice cream (them) and coffee (us). We cycled swiftly back to the lodge for lunch and a quick nap before heading out again to go swimming. Both Keiki and Humuhumu went down the slides with the bloke. Humuhumu even tried one of the flumes, a particularly twisty and fast water slide. I tried one of them yesterday and did not enjoy it so played with the children in the various pools.

Spending a little too long in the water meant we had to dash to the second pre-booked activity of the day: archery. Humuhumu did bows and arrows in Forest School in reception last year, so she was already pretty good at it and scored the most points out of all the children. Keiki seemed a little intimidated at first, probably because he was the youngest and also isn't used to being included in these things. Eventually he relaxed and started giving it a proper go, and he even hit the targets a couple of times at the end of the class.

By the time we'd cycled home we were all deliriously hungry and physically worn out, so it was pizza for tea. After I post, it will be beer o'clock and then sleep not long after, I reckon.
