The excavated Roman Baths in the English town of Bath showcase a fraction of its former magnificence, but still manage to be quite impressive.

There are people in period costume roaming around during visitor hours. Humuhumu didn't meet this one, but she did meet a chap called Peregrinus, who was a Gaul.

Some fragments of the temple pediment, and a projection showing how they might have been colourfully painted.

Not sure what he's so displeased about.

IMG_3345
Fragments of curses/pleas to the goddess, inscribed on scraps of lead, to punish wrongdoers. From left to right, these are for the following crimes: theft of a cape, theft of Vilbia (probably a slave), theft of a cloak and bathing tunic.

A glimpse into the bowels of the baths, where the really hot water bubbles up.

IMG_3355
Humuhumu was fascinated by this stone, which was used to sacrifice animals so that oracles could read their entrails. The children's audio tour provided a rather grisly role play of a divination!

Viewing the steam rising into the chilly winter air from an inaccessible portion of the baths.

Steamy waterfall.

"Can we touch the water, Daddy?"

IMG_3377
...after not actually waiting for a reply.

Keiki touching the algae. This was the highlight of the trip for him.

IMG_3383
Excitement over finding the last item on Hoot's list for the treasure hunt: an old bit of lead pipe in the drains.

Wishing well.

Long-suffering Daddy keeps the children from falling into the pool.

Roman curses were serious stuff!

Docimedis perdidit manicilia dua qui illas involavit ut mentes suas perdat et oculos suos in fano ubi destinat.

(Docimedis has lost two gloves and asks that the thief responsible should lose their minds and eyes in the goddess’s temple.)

Those are quite nice pictures. It's interesting to see what's being highlighted, and to get to see the architecture while both children are following an information tour.

Both of those sound like effective ways to gain knowledge.
