This is a scanned snapshot of me, aged about one, in my grandmother’s arms. We are at Kalalau Lookout in the Na Pali Coast State Park on Kauai in Hawai’i. When I was very small, my parents had a condo on Kauai and we went there for our holidays (from Honolulu). It was wonderful. I have vivid memories of the hike down the cliffs to the fine white sand of the deserted beach below the condo, and of playing for hours in the crystal clear water. My parents always found this surprising as I was, at the time they sold it, only about four years old.

Three horses grazing peacefully outside the window of my home office on a foggy morning.
You know that feeling when you're trying to capture the glorious pastoral landscape which you are privileged to view every day, and then you download the photos and discover that one of the animals involved has done something disgraceful?
( Yes. That. )

In the second installment of Weird Metal Contraptions I Was Placed In As A Baby, I give you my baby bouncer. At least this one features floral print fabrics instead of black leather like my high chair. The bouncer was modified by my grandfather (also pictured) so that he could bounce me with minimal effort. We’re on the lanai (porch) in my grandparents’ house in Honolulu, here.

My apologies to the requester that this photo doesn't include Telstar, but I thought it was a cute one, and it fulfills the prompt for a photo of two family members touching noses. This is Humuhumu and me during the Great Present Unwrapping on Christmas Day.
One of the other fun bits of our Norfolk days was that Granny and Granddad decided to watch the first two Harry Potter films with the grandchildren. This led to the following conversation.
Me: "So what houses do we think everyone is in?"
Nephew (younger): "I'm a Slytherin!"
Nephew (elder): "I'm Ravenclaw because they're the coolest."
Niece: "I'm definitely Ravenclaw because Ravenclaws are smart."
Nephew (younger): "I'm Slytherin!"
Niece: "Humuhumu is Gryffindor because she's brave and Keiki is Hufflepuff because he's just soooo cute."
Nephew (younger): "SLYTHERIN IS THE BEST!"
Niece: "Oh, and Auntie Nanila, you are DEFINITELY Gryffindor. Definitely."
Me, internally: "...I am?!"

Above, my (only white) cousin, aka Big Keiki, aged about five, spoon-feeds me, aged a few months, in the weird black leather and metal contraption that functioned as my high chair. The chair looks as though it were designed for more sinister or deviant purposes. It was the 70's in Hawai'i, so who knows. Anyway, I like how his mouth is wide open and mine is not.

This is me and my officemate B* in our Santa hats, which we wore to the bitter end (around 9:30 PM). Our lab Christmas party begins in the office with Irish coffees, after which we traipse across Hyde Park to a seekrit squirrel location (aka a pub) for 1 PM, when we commence eating and drinking in earnest. Later, there are Bananagrams, arguments about politics, and maudlin reminiscences about Christmas parties of the past. (There are no photos of this.)
Anyway, between organising, participating in, and recovering from, this party, there hasn't much time for updating Dreamwidth. I'll endeavour to rectify this over the next few days. Happy Solstice, everyone!
* In case you're wondering why he looks like a giant, he is. He's about 6'5". I'm a foot shorter than him.
[YouTube video, about 30 seconds long. Humuhumu sings "Away in a manger", followed by applause from her serenaded parents.]
Happy Friday! Humuhumu was an angel in her pre-school nativity play and got to say the last line all by herself ("And that is the story of Christmas.") She practised her songs faithfully for weeks beforehand. Usually early in the morning when she came in to the Big Bed.
