The Scandinavians seem to have a real flair for budget horror films these days. Død Snø (Dead Snow) was one of my favourite films last year. Hippie dippy snowboarder types turn into foaming rabid killers at the first sight of Nazi zombies. What a beautiful premise.

Onward to Trollhunter.

PROLOGUE: This footage was found in the snow in north Norway. It is believed to be genuine.

AUDIENCE: Really?

PROLOGUE: ...No. For pity’s sake, suspend your disbelief, shut up and watch the film.

Lo, spoilers lie ahead. )

Several of the last few films I've watched have lent themselves well to this sort of summary, so I'm going to start with Priest, starring Maggie Q and a bunch of nice-looking blokes, in 15 minutes.

PRIEST: Hello, I'm pretty and tormented. Here is a flashback sequence of me losing my best friend to the clutches of the gooey grey vampires.

CHURCH: The gooey grey vampires are all locked away forever with no hope of escape. Go about your business. Nothing to see here. Ignorance is strength. Freedom is slavery. War is peace. Wait, what film are we in again?

VAMPIRES: *escape*

EVERYONE: Wow, totally didn't see that coming!

AUDIENCE: Really?

EVERYONE: No.

Here be spoilers )
I have a tiny little champagne hangover today so this may be slightly incoherent. Main highlights:

  • Walking down the red carpet at the very last Harry Potter movie premiere to the sound of deafening screaming.

  • Diagon Alley set up along the red carpet path from Trafalgar Square to Leicester Square. Photos with owls and Death-Eaters.

  • All the scenes in the film with Snape.

  • Walking into the afterparty in Billingsgate, which is a massive venue and being greeted with a glass of champagne.

  • Viewing from the upper level the big bubbling cauldron decorations, the chocolate fountain (mmm strawberries) and the sweet stand.

  • Meeting the three Davids (the producers) and the director as well as a large chunk of the visual effects staff.

  • Getting up the courage to ask Alan Rickman for an autograph.

  • Being very glad that my future happiness was in no way predicated on being at that event, which, I sensed, was not the prevailing sentiment.

Nevertheless, it certainly felt like a privilege to be in attendance at the premiere, and I was drawn into the film emotionally much more than I expected to be. Behind the cut are a lot of photos from my crappy phone camera and a few scans (e.g. of my ticket). I hope they convey a sense of what it was like to be there.

Walk the red carpet with me. )
Lords and ladies and champagne galore at the Royal Society soiree last night.

Tonight, the Harry Potter 7 Part 2 premiere, followed by the afterparty. (It's just too bad I can't spot celebrities to save my life.)

I feel like I should be dismissing the servants who've just brought me lunch with a languid wave of the cigarette holder in my bejeweled fingers, but instead I'm putting on a luminous blue polo shirt and heading off to be enthusiastic about science for four hours.

Perhaps not so glamourous after all.
