Day 56/183: Keiki's glasses

All other news today has been superseded by this item: Keiki's glasses arrived!

A couple of months ago, Keiki's eyes were tested at school, as is routine for Reception (kindergarten) age children. To our surprise, he failed the test in both eyes. We were surprised because, due to Humuhumu's quite severe long-sightedness and amblyopia, he had been checked (qualitatively) aged two and deemed to be fine.

However, once we'd finally managed to secure a full optician's appointment, we learned that he, too, is severely long-sighted. We tried to pick up his glasses last Saturday but it turned out the opticians had just swapped to delivering all new prescriptions by courier. So we had to wait.

We were worried that he wouldn't want to keep them on. It was a futile effort. He tried both pairs, decided to wear the green ones, and then kept them there for the rest of the day without any prompting. He was so excited when we went for a walk and kept commenting on everything he could (presumably suddenly) see very clearly.

I almost got those frames, or very similar (in an adult size), and still think they're cool, even though Ron, the optician, advised me to get a mostly-brown pair.

hooray! That is the best possible outcome - that the glasses make such a noticeable positive difference, that he adjusts right away and keeps them on!

Yes! When he got up this morning we reminded him to put on his glasses and he trotted straight back into his room to get them. :)

The shirt looks blocky, like it might be a Minecraft Creeper.

Hopefully the world in sharper perception makes things much easier for Keiki.

Correct! It's a creeper. That's his second favourite pair of pyjamas. His favourite is...another pair of Minecraft pyjamas, with reversible sequin creeper head.

I think we'll see a big increase in his capacities in the coming weeks and months.

Reversible sequin stuff seems like a great fidget and something useful fur different mod expression, but I fear I wouldn't like the feel of it, or I'd pick at it so much the sequins would come off, and that wouldn't be any fun at all. So I guess I'm a bit glad this particular idea wasn't in fashion when I was small enough to want to wear it.

Oh, wow, he looks suddenly very grown up in glasses! I'm so glad he was excited about all the things he can now see clearly - I hope the world is very exciting for him now. Especially the written world.

Oh yes. He's still getting used to them after the initial thrill. He's been under the weather the past few days so when he gets tired, he takes them off.
