My advent calendar when I was a child consisted of a wall hanging with a set of 24 small felt stockings, and I received, alternately, a chocolate coin and an actual coin. I still have it and hang it up every year, though it no longer gets used.

I prefer surprises.. like, you never exactly what's in today's drawer.. the one I used to like was a sort of cabinet of drawers.

But.. I haven't done that in years. Not even too sure where it is now. No point if you're the one filling it, is there.

With a parent who worked in bookshops, I always had the art ones, often based on books like Brian Froud's Gnomes. It was only about 5 years ago that I learned that chocolate options exist.

When I was little I had one with just pictures and I loved it. Now I want one with wine byt I don’t have one 😞

I recall from my childhood that my solo-parenting mum had 2 advent calendars with religious images behind each door. Both calendars came out each year (one for me, one for my brother). I don’t remember them clearly enough if she went as far as switching who got which calendar each year, but yeah. No gifts or chocolates or sweets or toys for us! Just the catholic art...

I don't think I've ever had one, and I don't think I'd particularly enjoy opening one up each day at this point in my life. But I could see tea as an interesting option.

For the past couple of years I have been getting the fantastic "Die Drei ???" calendars from Germany. They're for kids and in German but: each day you get a bit of story with a puzzle. The doors aren't numbered, instead the answer to the puzzle tells you which door to open (there's a way to cheat if you can't work it out). As it's a detective series, the presents are all detective-themed and sometimes you get something which you need to use to solve the next day's puzzle. I love them!

I've had chocolate ones before, but that also always came with religious things attached, and so I've fallen out of the tradition, even as I see the ones with variations on an entirely secular theme around.
