I have, on occasion, considered eliminating the fruit layer entirely and just making crumble crumble. That’s how much I like crumble. But it would probably be a little dry, so I’m willing to concede that it’s probably necessary to have some fruit.

Flip the ratio around and you have the type of crumble I like. XD

I like bits of my crumble topping to be juice-chewy and that needs enough fruit for the juice to bubble right through the crumble!

If you add pouring cream or custard then it won't be dry any more.

This is clearly the correct volume of crumble for the vessel, but it ought to be level with the top of said vessel with the rest of the space taken up by apple.

But the fruit is the best bit!

(...actually the best bit is probably the mandatory custard. I'll try again.)

But the fruit is the second-best bit!

Yes good. That's the right amount of crumble.

I'm also tempted to make crumble without the fruit, just to see what happens. It seems like it'd be a good base ingredient for other things, like how I'll use granola.

I have a recipe for streusel cake which is pretty much crumble crumble with apple decoration. Can send when I get home if you're interested.

Ideally I'd have the pot filled right to the top with the crumble mixture but that is basically how I make it. I have tried just making the crumble without the fruit, but it's more like breakfast cereal. Usually I sate that craving with streusel cake which is largely crumble.

Now I want crumble.

My concept of crumble crumble is making my own muesli. I thought I was a lots of crumble to fruit person compared with other people but you are extreme!

That is pretty much my perfect crumble:fruit ratio, but my GF prefers it majority fruit... (Relationships are full of compromises!)

That is a crumble after my own heart, is what it is. A creamy caramel to go over the top would solve the dryness issue!

50:50 in this house. The best bit is where the crumble is moist and stick from the fruit. Have just make apple and blackberry crumble with half of this year's paltry blackberry yield.

I'd probably want a 50/50 ratio, maaaybe a little more apple.

I have frequently considered the same thing, with the same concerns. Once possible solution would be to just pour some apple juice in the bowl before adding the crumble mix. =:o}

(I have never tried it, because that would involve me actually *cooking* something, which IMHO is a job for red-haired clowns and/or microwaves. =:o} )
