Pokémon Go: Week 13 + Abyssrium

• My three 10 km eggs hatched into: a relatively low CP Jynx (grumble), a high CP Pinsir (sigh) aaaaaand….A SCYTHER. The last was new to me and also very powerful. So I’m happy. I’m saving the fourth 10 km egg for when I level up.
  
• Nearly finished with Level 24. So...close...want....Lucky...Egg...argh.
  
• I cracked and did some boring Pidgey evolutions because I was so tired of hauling around loads of them.
  
• My Pokédex claims I have attempted and failed to catch a Nidoqueen and an Exeggcutor. I find this irritating because I cannot recall seeing either.
  
• I walked my Jigglypuff for sufficient candies so that they’re ready to evolve along with the Omanyte and the Seel. Now walking my Clefairy because even though I’ve only caught a few, it’s only 1 km per candy.
  
• I reached Silver level on the Breeder medal for hatching 100+ eggs, and Silver on the Fisherman medal for catching 50 big Magikarp. I also have sufficient candies to evolve a third Gyarados. Typically I earn enough candies to be able to fully power up my highest CP Magikarp before I do the evolution as well. It’s a bit ridiculous.
  
• I think I’m seeing a greater variety of Pokémon spawns near my house. Don’t get me wrong, the majority are still comprised of Magikarp, Goldeen, Poliwag, Psyduck, Slowpoke and Staryu and occasionally the evolved forms of these (apart from Gyarados - I’ve never seen a wild Gyarados). But I see Eevee, Oddish, Zubat and even Drowsee now, where I would only have ever seen Pidgey and Rattata previously. The change seems to have happened around the time the nests were rearranged. Has anyone else observed this?

Abyssrium, which I’d almost stopped playing entirely, has a Halloween event going on. Sir Tap Tap’s guide has been updated so that you can optimise your candy usage to collect all the ghost and bone fish. I’m enjoying the theme, as you can see from my reef below, with its pumpkins, candles, tombstones, ghost fish and bone turtle.

Hyde Park is jammed full of Clefairies on the eastern side, if that helps.

Since one of the recent updates, the pokedex now counts as "seen" any mons you have been around in gyms, so the nidoqueen and eggexutor were probably sitting at the top of gyms you werein or walked by.

Yes, I distinctly remember seeing them in a gym I fought a couple of battles in since the update. So that must be right. I don't like it, though. There's no way you can "catch" those so why does it count them?

I suspect it's so that the Pokedex gets filled in with shadows esp for the regional variants you can't actually catch, so people have more of an idea of what goes where when scrolling through without needing to look it up -- but. as I say. cannot decide if annoyed.

like it does mean I have had to abruptly COMPLETELY DROP my anxiety/distress when there's shit in my Pokedex that I've seen but not caught? because there was no possible way for me to catch it, so it's not that I'm not Good Enough, so I can just... cheerfully... ignore it. WHICH IS NICE. But I'm still not sure I actually like it, and "together with a lot of hard work it enables me to circumvent one of the Major Pathological Anxieties I was having" is not... exactly a ringing endorsement :-p

because the qualification is "seen", not "tried to catch": you know what they look like and the name, so your pokedex reflects this knowledge.

I do get the logic. I just don't like it. Mostly because there's no way to distinguish between things you've seen but had no mechanism for catching or evolving, and things you've tried to catch but failed. I wish they'd added another category, so you had "seen", "attempted catch" and "caught".

This morning I FINALLY caught a Grimer, having caught a Snorlax near work last week (it is kind of smol and rubbish but SNORLAX)

also ENVY at your being nearly ready for 3rd Gyarados and specifically for being at silver badge already; I am a bit under a quarter of the way to Gyarados #3...

Ghost fiiiiish. <3

I'm working on the ghost dolphin now, but have just acquired my first oarfish and am having a great time tapping it to make it wiggle. :D

Yessss. I have so many ghost fish now that they don't just shoal, they school. This makes me happy.

The oarfish is great. :D

I do not like the oarfish. I just got one today and it dominates the screen. I miss the days of lots of tiny fish only now.

Have you stashed it away? I did that pretty much immediately with some of the bigger fish/sharks/whales. It feels a bit of a shame when you've just created them, but it also minimises clutter.

I do not know about stashing! I shall investigate. It's good to know that's an option.

Just in case you haven't found it yet: In the little status bar that shows you how much vitality & how many gems, fish, etc you have, there's a little red button labelled "Manage". If you tap that, you enter a screen that shows all the fish. When you tap a fish, you see how many you have active and how many are stored, and you can stash as many or few away as you like as long as your fish total stays at or below 80.

This is new. I was confused by it as well, but a colleague explained that they had changed it so that if you met it in a gym, it'll count as having seen it. So not just a failed catch any more.

Personally, I preferred it the old way, where it was only failed catches.

I preferred that too. Now there's no way to tell if you've seen it but it was actually impossible to catch, or if you tried and failed. I wish they'd introduced a new category (e.g. "attempted catches") so that you could make this distinction.

HUH. I never posted the comment I typed out.

The Halloween theme launched *right after* I finished putting together my gothy Abyss entirely occupied by black fish and dolphins and turtles (minis the leatherback because somehow my mystery chests only JUST now started spawning) so that was satisfying whole I built up my other worldly reef. Which is now positively teeming. Whee.

Gothy Abyss sounds excellent. (I do like the black seahorses particularly.) I love the gigantic school of ghost fish swirling around mine now.
