I think we could all stand to finish the week with something fluffy and not so harrowing. So here is a calming photo of me at my desk at work at 07:15 yesterday morning, as the first installment of the Seven Days of Selfies bit of the LJ-versary celebrations.

Scientist at work

And here is Friday's Unscientific Poll, which is soothing and about socks and has been shamelessly poached from my Twitter friend [twitter.com profile] katieshould.

These days, I find it easier to sleep in socks than without them (even on warm days, or when snugged under a duvet on cool ones), because my foot has developed a tendency to itch when bare.

Socks are SATAN.

Which is to say I literally spend as much time as humanly possible without danger of either literal frostbite, massive social offence or injury to my feet barefoot. I hate socks. It's a massive screaming sensory problem with me, and one of the ones that I laugh at bitterly: I did spend a good, you know, twenty years of my life if not more unaware that this was a problem! I also spent a good twenty years of my life prone to overload on a near-daily basis and a lot of unfortunate behaviours to cope with that.

Nowadays I know that socks (anything that covers both my toes and the bridge of my foot at the same time, in fact: I can have my bridge covered or my toes covered but NOT BOTH and neither is preferrable) are one of the things that takes up massive sensory processing RAM, I avoid wearing them, but that means I rEALLY NOTICE when I have to have them on and they set that off. *makes face*

I legit live in sandals AS SOON as it's not raining freezing cold rain on a daily basis, and stay in them until I am actually risking chillblains/frostbite/etc. And within a home, I am always, always barefoot. I took slipper-shoes (the really really BARE ballet flats we had about seven years ago) to live in my locker at the university, because GAH.

I like fancy shoes as an occasional dress-up thing -- and those typically don't require SOCKS -- but mostly I would seriously love to be able to go genuinely barefoot everywhere. Given I can't, I thank the gods I finally realised tabi socks are at least vastly less sensory RAM eating for me and that they are a thing I can buy off the internet because oh god it makes so much difference to not having a huge chunk of my brain flipping its shit over my toes being encased together. (Toe socks are, however, the devil. They hurt. >:|)

I wish I could do the sandals thing year round. I live in a tropical climate, but last year I pretty much lived in sandals. Even with sunblock, which I slather on pretty religiously, I ended up with some pretty gnarly sun damage. Been keeping my feet covered when outdoors and just waiting for the damage to become less conspicuous, which will take time.

Nice office!

I'm deathly afraid of the cold, so I kind of have to wear socks to bed in winter :p

Even when I lived in a colder climate, I never wore socks to bed. Just didn't like the feeling of fabric on my feet while trying to sleep.

Your office looks really nice.

I only sleep in socks if I can't get warm. (I have the metabolism of a lizard, so I'm in socks for a big chunk of winter.)

It depends - usually I do not wear socks to sleep, but if I am very cold, putting socks on can really help.

Trainer socks! Stop below ankle, keep toes warm, easily pulled off in sleep. Trust me, it'll change your life

I occasionally wear them, but usually take them off sometime during the night.

As I've gotten older, I've gotten to where I CAN? I just don't sleep WELL. Usually, to sleep, I have socks off AND my duvet is pulled up so my feet are out from under them.

I sleep well, either way - my problem is more about having enough padding so that the cats don't spike me in the middle of my sleep.

Your office looks very serene.

Socks have the unfortunate tendency to make my toes feel damp, and at that point I'm scraping them off my feet in disgust.

Although to the point about ankles getting too hot: I've definitely been known to sleep with socks on just the half of my foot with toes, to avoid the problem of overheated ankles. Start with them on all the way, eventually kick them down so they're halfway off (but still on my toes), and usually by morning they're all the way off but by then I don't care.

it gets to me so much but I just cannot do socks. It could be -10 and I'll be mourning how cold my feet are but socks on sheets just...urgh no. I don't like the sensation of them touching, more than a heat thing.

I sleep weird though. I sleep best in old footie shirts and oversized wwe shirts. So my choice in bed gear should probs not be taken too seriously :P

I answered "Yes" but lately I have been taking off my socks after about an hour in bed.

I narrowly chose "no" only because I live in a warm weather area where seven months or more out of the year I don't need socks on to keep the feet warm. But! Those other five months of the year on cold nights, I do. Then I'll wear them and can't sleep without them, because my feet, like Goldilocks, can't be too hot or too cold, they have to be...*sigh*...yes...

Just right.

I just have this sudden urge to stare at my feet, because I can't control what they make me do.

Sleeping in/not in socks depends entirely on the external temperature and what my metabolism is doing. I learnt long ago, in the days when I did a lot of camping, that it's all about whatever works for you that night. If it takes socks, long underwear, a fleece and a balaclava so be it (try camping above treeline in New Hampshire in December!). Equally stark naked may be too hot especially if a cat is involved.

I sleep in socks a large amount of the year - my feet get really cold when I'm asleep (thanks, family genetics for the terrible circulation!) and then I don't sleep because my feet are cold. Ironically, I spend most of my time walking around my house barefoot.

Socks serve double duty for me in bed: They keep the tootsies warm, and they also act as protection for my eczema (left foot) against wandering fingernails...

Of course, sometimes the urge to scratch is just too strong, and off comes the sock. Then I wake up a few hours later with a cold (and possibly slightly stingy, if I scratched too much) left foot - probably sticking out from under the duvet! - and the right one still wrapped up and cosy. =:o?
