Painting the baby spacecraft: Completion

I finished painting the baby Cluster spacecraft!



In brief: 2 coats black ink on the engines. 3 thin washes royal blue on the solar panels, followed by 1 wash of black ink, 1 wash light blue, 1 wash royal blue and dry-brushing with white. Metallic silver on the gaps between panels. Top details received additional coats of metallic gold.

I did keep one of them, because it was the first one Andy made and it doesn't have the right size mounting holes, so it can't be used in the exhibit

I think it might have to be Phoenix, because that's the unofficial name for the Cluster 1 spacecraft. It's slightly different from the others because it was made from salvaged bits of the first Cluster mission, which exploded over the swamps of French Guiana.

Fun fact #1: The French Foreign Legionnaires in the area got called up to recover the explodey bits. Fun fact #2: Part of the magnetometer survived the explosion. When the power supply was returned the UK, it was plugged in, and it still worked.

Hee! Phoenix sounds very apt indeed. Gotta respect a piece of equipment that still works after being hauled out of a swamp; I'm pretty sure I'd be non-functional after that.

Hee. They're a lot simpler in design than most spacecraft, and smaller. It makes them terribly easy to anthropomorphise.
