This is a male and a female great yellow mormon, mating. They did not budge no matter how many small children shouted and pointed at them. Now that’s focus.

Male and female great yellow mormon, mating, with another male attempting to interfere. This was quite a violent row and difficult to capture.


I’ve sent off the film photos to be developed. I took a bunch in Delft in January. The roll was on 21 out of 36 when we got to the butterfly farm, and the children finished off the rest, so we shall see what they managed to capture. Hopefully there are some good ones in there.

Gosh, the pupae. It's amazing to see them in such detail.

The female is the one fighting off the intruding male in the last photo!

Seeing the pupae lined up like that brought home how distinctive each species' is.

I am curious about how the other pictures will turn out. Your small ones often have an eye for framing and photography.

Keiki was the one who found that caterpillar, hidden under a leaf out in the main enclosure. So I'm optimistic!

It's worth it! I generally find Stratford a bit stressful because of the traffic and the crowds, but the butterfly farm is on the opposite side of the river from the theatre and the town centre, so it's calmer.

Oo, those are fabulous. Our local one doesn't open for a few weeks yet, but I think we need to organize a visit now that the boys are obsessed with The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

And you have reminded me I should send off the film from my friend's wedding, which is YEARS old, and see if anything come out of it.

It's an excellent afternoon out. They will probably love watching the butterflies hatch.

The colours might be a little odd but as long as the film hasn't been exposed to intense sunlight you should get something out of the roll. Fingers crossed!

It's been in the camera the whole time but it has moved house three times and been in all kinds of temperatures! And it was used in a howling gale on Malin Head so god knows what was captured at all! Should be dramatic if they came out though.

Thank you! There's a butterfly house in Vienna (Schmetterlinghaus) that the kids and I love, so we're planning to go there in April too.

Thank you! The macro lens is a lovely piece of kit but gosh it is temperamental.
