A couple of months ago, BBC 6 Music played a heavy metal version of The Stick Song that is quite possibly the least favourite earworm of every adult in the UK with at least one child under the age of six. It’s from a now-infamous episode of a CBeebies show calledHey Duggee. Duggee is a cartoon dog/scout leader who for some reason always says "Woof", while his scout troupe consisting of a variety of tiny animals can all speak English. The troupe earn improbably titled badges* over the course of each seven minute episode.
I looked up the song on Spotify and discovered that this band, Slay Duggee, has made an entire album of heavy metal versions of CBeebies show theme songs. It is wonderful. I must particularly commend their rendition of “Baby Shark”. Do check out Kids Love Metal here.
Jan 8: Would you rather live in a deep-sea station or a space station?
I’m not sure I’d want to live in either. I like my creature comforts. I’d visit both for a few months, though.
Jan 9: What’s your favorite “comfort food” when you’re feeling down or unwell?
In order of preference: Salty popcorn. Oreos. A big squishy mango.
Jan 10: What was the last film you saw at a theatre/cinema?
Frozen 2. It was an emotional rollercoaster and I cried a lot. I don’t cry much over real life. I rely on fiction to render me a hot mess for weeks on end. My kids seemed to find the film forgettable but I definitely didn’t.
Jan 11: Have you ever been asked for your telephone number and you didn't want to give it? What did you do?
So many times. When I was at university (prior to the ubiquitousness of mobile phones) I used to give it to people anyway and then avoid the phone for weeks. My German flatmate, bless her, used to screen my calls without complaint. She was much more sensible than I was and advised me that I should be telling the trail of dudes following me about to sod off.
I stopped giving my number to people when I didn’t want to somewhere in my mid-twenties, so it took me a while to learn that lesson.
Jan 12: Have you ever had a “crush” on a fictional character?
Yes, lots, especially when I was younger. One of the earliest was Jean-Luc Picard (Star Trek: TNG).
Jan 13: What are your favorite pizza toppings?
I like a good margherita pizza (the traditional kind) and ham and pineapple (apparently the most controversial, but I don’t care).
Jan 14: Who was your very first best friend? Are you still in contact or communication with them?
The first one I can remember was Athena, who I met in kindergarten, although my parents told me that a boy called Asa was my best friend at early school in Honolulu.
If occasional contact via Facebook and Instagram counts, then yes, Athena and I are still in touch, although I get the sense we’ve evolved into possibly not-so-compatible people.
* My favourite was the Brave Banana Badge.

In our house, any time anyone does anything, someone may say "Well done, [name]. You can have your Dishwasher badge" or whatever. Or "Ah, woof!" any time anyone states the obvious.

Edited to add: they got a spider badge. This is not a badge I wish to acquire.
