Please do not ask me which of the Minecraft characters this is. Keiki and Humuhumu recently painted a whole series of them, and this is my favourite. I think it's the eyes. And the jaunty stride.

On a different note, prior to installing Minecraft on our tablet, we've never struggled to constrain their game usage. Now we've had to make and establish firm limits. They want to play Minecraft (on Creative mode; Survival mode isn't allowed) to the exclusion of nearly all their previous favourites. Humuhumu has been teaching herself to build more and more elaborate buildings. Keiki makes giant underwater gardens full of different corals and fish, and zoos teeming with animals. They never want to put it down.

L was never into it, but O found Minecraft (Creative mode) very addictive, too. Nowadays he goes back to it occasionally, but I think just in Survival mode when playing with his friends. I can't say I ever got it, even when I politely nodded through him showing off the various trap doors and wolf kennels and whatever, but it did seem more creative than a lot of the other apps he was playing, even if the aesthetics were definitely not my thing.

It's the eyes, and the very merry orange landscape maybe.

I have never been able to click with Minecraft! I'm glad they're enjoying it. Even if it requires time limits.

It is a giant sandbox of stuff that can be put together in just about any way. And it's extensible and scriptable for when they want new toys or to design their own. I can see why neither wants to put it down.

I do like the colours in that painting.

All three of my nieces went through various stages of obsession with Minecraft. My brother went from worrying about it to excitedly telling me all about the things they'd created (a flock of roaming houses with dinosaur legs was a particular favourite). And all three of the nieces ended up learning some basic coding off the back of that Minecraft obsession, which has helped with various school stuff since then.

Eldest tells me he sometimes plays in Survival mode, but mostly Creative - and blimey, what creations! A few were a little worrying, like the gladiatorial arena where villagers got to fight zombies (or something like that!), but more often it's elaborate buildings or landscapes, underground lairs and what-not. And now Small wants to join in, she's not as creative yet as far as I can see, but they link over the WiFi so she can visit his creations.

And yes, their tablet time with it does need limiting, but not as much as the time Eldest in particular spends watching Youtube videos of other people playing it. OK, he does pick up ideas from them sometimes, but gods, the presentation is *awful*.

Youngest found Classic Minecraft on poki.com, and same thing -- he'd play it all the time if we'd let him. But he builds interesting stuff, and it's better than the car chase video games which are his other fascination, so when he's on the computer we encourage Minecraft over other games.
