Skansen is the Swedish cultural museum. It looks from the outside like a children’s amusement park, and it has elements of this in it, but it’s also a buildings museum and a zoo and a showcase for traditional practices of Swedish ethnic groups, like reindeer herding. It has an inexplicable funicular.

Critically, it is also extremely good for shed inspiration.

This Sami dwelling combines all the best things about sheds, treehouses, and log cabins, does it not? Yes please, one of these for my back garden.

Skansen
First stop: Lunch at Solliden (a gigantic burger and chips, because did I mention the big strong beers on Friday night?)

Skansen
For some reason there were various illuminated animals scattered about the buffet. This one is presumably calculated to haunt the dreams of all the children.

Skansen
Then, onwards with the exploring. This is the stage, where cultural events take place.

Skansen
A beautiful wooden windmill, framed by autumnal foliage.

Skansen
Red wooden allotment hut with white trim. Shed Inspiration #1.

Skansen
Shiny silver globe covered in green netting and surrounded by pretty purple wildflowers.

Skansen
Stunning ochre house with grey shutters, the Hazelius mansion, home of the founder of Skansen.

Skansen
These houses are works of art.

Skansen
Arched doorway leading to a garden.

Skansen
Ye Olde Garden Centre.

Skansen
Ye Olde Petrol Pump.

Skansen
Ye Olde Telephone Booth.

Skansen
I am not entirely certain what this eagle is thinking of the cherub’s attempt to use it as winged transport. Cherub and eagle both to scale.

Skansen
Dear Cherub, Do Not Trust that bust.

Skansen
Carl Linnaeus examines his plants.

Skansen
King Oscar’s Terrace. He liked overlooking things in a grand way, I guess.

Skansen
More autumnal foliage from Oscar’s Terrace. Note the masts of the Vasa Museum (built around a sunken 17th-century wreck) poking up from the trees on the left.

Skansen
The inexplicable funicular viewed from the walkway over the tracks.
Skansen
One green carriage goes down the track…

Skansen
...whilst the other simultaneously travels up.

Skansen
Much shed inspiration now follows.

Skansen
Such wonderful little details.

Skansen
Yep, definitely a desirable shed.

Skansen
We watched the flatbread baking, done by people in costume, but it was forbidden to take photos. The flatbreads were bigger than I’d expected, like a large pizza.

Skansen
Person in costume, roaming about.

Skansen
Rune stone.

Skansen
This one is all about the carving above the little porch.

Skansen
Can I have these at ¼ scale please, for my sheds?

Skansen
I can probably stop repeating the word “shed” now.

Skansen
Look, reindeer!

Skansen
If only there were a way to fold this up and take it in the car for camping.

Skansen
It’s got a reindeer antler as a door handle. Nothing about this can be improved.

Skansen
Here’s that perfect Sami dwelling again.

Skansen
Another reindeer. They really do blend well with the landscape.

Skansen
Harbour seal habitat.

Skansen
Expectant harbour seals await their lunch.

Skansen
There was a time when someone thought that this bear cutout was a good thing to put in front of their shop.

Skansen
More attractive woodwork.

Skansen
Rather garish green and blue (very un-Swedish, I am informed) woodwork.

Skansen
Bunnies grazing on a turf roof whilst children observe from a small clear plastic dome.

Skansen
Cattle and calves, grazing.

Skansen
Silky-haired goats and their keeper.

Skansen
Rather ominous-looking sheep-shearing device.

Skansen
Small, colourful train makes it easier for tired legs to tour the whole park.

Skansen
Back to the shed inspiration, I’m afraid.

Skansen
Lovely turf roof.

Skansen
The Forester’s Hut (is more luxurious than the name would suggest).

Skansen
This is more of a Forester’s Hut.

Skansen
Room with a View of a Pond.

Skansen
This is a barn. Not a shed. Really.

Skansen
Wheelhouse.

Skansen
One final look out over the autumn foliage before descending back down the hill.

Another tram ride carried us back to the Central Station, whereupon I returned to the hotel for a disco nap, so as to be fully prepared for Bodyfest that night.

....okay, the raised dwelling is definitely cool! But I'm going to be honest: nearly all I can think of looking at it, is Baba Yaga's hut.

True, but I'd argue that was a feature, not a bug!

If I ever have a house like that, I may carve toenails into some of the roots.

Thank you. I did not know about St Fagan's either. As children we went to Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, which was fabulous, and I've always intended to take the kids there but it is in West Sussex and I am in Somerset so this hasn't happened. Cardiff feels slightly nearer.

Some very nice looking material there, and I do like the raised hut. I do hope that the way of getting up there can be pulled up in case of invasion or flooding.

Oh, good. Prefect for riding out the weather in, then.

A friend's son stayed in one of the tipi style ones as part of his summer holiday - charcoal burner's hut, I believe she said.

There are some excellent sheds there. I am mildly disappointed that the harbour seals do not have a shed of their own. It seems rather unfair.

Excuse me I will be dreaming about outbuildings today.

I adore Skansen, and I remember that hut! (and the smell of the reindeer...) and yes, I was pretty sure I'd taken a fairly similar photo and here it is - over ten years ago, hmmm. chicken feet

I think you must have overlapped in Skansen with my partner and her children, or very nearly! I didn't make it myself because I was busy in synagogue most of Saturday, but I'm quite amused that we both visited Stockholm the same weekend. Also, these are some lovely photos of highly photogenic sheds and autumn foliage.
