Day 202/365: Rio de Janeiro

The bloke came back last night from a week-long trip to Rio de Janeiro for a conference. He was ensconced on the 24th floor of the Hilton on Copacabana beach, and went running every morning before breakfast in order to soak up some of the atmosphere before the day full of meetings.

He did get to do a little bit of sightseeing. There was a jeep trip one afternoon up the Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park for the attendees to see the 30-metre-high Christ the Redeemer statue, which was quite a stunning spot to watch the sunset, let alone see such an iconic piece of art.

Capuchin monkeys sitting on a National Park sign. The monkeys broke into the jeeps while their occupants were out hiking. They stole all the papayas that had been brought for a post-hike snack. Not only that, they spat the seeds all over the floors of the jeeps. So naughty!

I would have been properly grumpy about them eating the papayas. I love papayas. :P

Papaya is one of those fruits I want to try fresh. They're at least not as intimidating as grabbing a whole jackfruit. XD

It's as if they know exactly how annoying they're being to the humans and they simply don't care. :D

Me too! As nice as the Hilton was, I think he would have been a bit frustrated at being confined to one section of the beach.

He's not normally much of one for taking pictures, but I asked him to take lots and he obliged. \o/

That looks like a fun ride and hike to see the sights. Maybe some day you'll get to do it as well.

I hope so! I'd quite like to take the kids. Humuhumu now has a Christ the Redeemer t-shirt, and she is very pleased to wear a top with Jesus on it. :)

Oh I'm so jealous I could vomit! I went to the Christ the Redeemer statue at sunset as well - probably almost exactly now, 11 years ago, now I come to think of it - and I think it might be the best time. Really awe inspiring.

Bloke was quite lucky.

It was overcast and/or drizzly the whole time I was in Rio, so not worth going up to the statue as one would not have been able to see anything.

Yes, all you would have had was some monkeys stealing your papayas, and while that's amusing, it's probably not the sort of experience you were after...
