View of the Rathaus (City Hall) from the windows of our Viennese flat.

On our first full day in Vienna, I put the telephoto lens on my dSLR and took a few shots out the windows of our flat.

One of the statues on the roof of the Parliament building. Briefly, winged woman in chariot pulled by four horses waves laurel wreath majestically. (Why does she need a chariot if she has wings?)

Moving hastily onward, as we didn't that morning.

Humuhumu sits on Keiki's lap, which is "the wrong way round"! Both are in pyjamas and dressing gowns.

Humuhumu jumps, Keiki waves his legs in the air on his daddy's lap, Granddad looks on amused. All recovering from a leisurely breakfast.

We finally finished getting ready to go out, and wandered down past Dr Karl Renner, for whom Dr-Karl-Renner-ring is named.

Granny and Granddad walking hand-in-hand. The bloke carries Keiki. It is a lovely sunny day.

We stumble upon a fair happening in front of the Rathaus. It is celebrating the various regional dress, culture and foods of Austria. Oh, and booze. I would say about 50% of the stalls were selling that, and people were tucking in enthusiastically. It was 10:30 AM.

IMG_6228
A large area in front of a stage where a lederhosen-clad band were playing had been floored with hay and surrounded by hay bales. The children immediately dived in.

Keiki hands me a big fistful of hay.

Humuhumu gleefully eats a Manner wafer whilst bloke, Granny and Granddad look on.

The towers of the Rathaus from almost immediately below.

Keiki makes his most charming face for the camera.

After a wander around the fair and a small sampling of the (non-alcoholic) fare, we head off in search of a proper lunch.

A short walk along pavements shaded by elegant arcades brought us to a lively cafe.

IMG_6258
It gave us a nice little glimpse of the twin spires of the Votivkirche.

For some reason I was nominated to place everyone's order in German, so I did.

IMG_6262
Keiki liked his croissant and warm milk.

Humuhumu liked her cheese toast and warm milk, too, although she insisted on making a silly face.

The first ice cream photo [Day 101] was taken on our walk back to the flat.

Later that afternoon, we had a walk through the Museumsquartier, where Keiki and Humuhumu said hello to the ducks outside the Leopold Museum, who remain blissfully ignorant of the sign which sternly reminds the public that animals are not allowed in the fountain.

OK, we don't drink it at 10:30 a.m., but as we always come back from Austria with suitcases full of booze, I cannot judge them too harshly :P

Love the photos in the hay especially!

Nice view- we had a similar one when we were given the loan of a friend's flat in Budapest just across the river from the Hungarian parliament.

Lovely. I've got an apartment booked near the Belvedere for five nights in July and am currently plotting how I'll get myself home (my bloke is going to fly both ways), as it's not much more expensive to buy an Interrail ticket, including the Eurostar supplements, than it is to book individual trains and that gives me three more days free travel.

The rail trips are great, but yes, would be very wearing for children.

The small ones and the grown ones all look like they're having a ball. And with lots of nice architecture around to stare at, too.
