Day 9/365: Friendship & food

Tonight I went to dinner with a friend and ex-colleague (H) whom I haven't seen for a year and a half. We talked and laughed and we ate delicious Filipino food together. Not a half-bad way to spend an evening, and I got to introduce both of them to the joys of pancit and purple ice cream, which I'm pleased to report they thoroughly appreciated.


Milkfish, tilapia and vegetables on a bed of rice, with extra vegetables and soup on the side. Plate of pancit as well, for sharing. So much yum. All eaten.

I can report that the pancit is good as well.

We had some chicken adobo with the meal too and that was better (not overcooked!) than the ones we had with the kamayan.

Now I really want Filipino food.

I am reminded that I was going to share this with you, following discussion of arroz caldo: 20-minute congee. The recipe is for Chinese-style congee, but the freezing technique should work for any sort of rice porridge. I've not tried it yet but plan to next week.

Ooh, I hadn't thought of that application — nice idea. Let me know how it goes! I finally got around to freezing some, and will be trying it out for breakfast tomorrow.

Yep, cucumber and mango. Verrrry nice with rice!

Bashed cucumber salad (拍黄瓜) is great with rice. (Chinese, not Filipino, but it's my favourite cucumber-with-rice thing so I thought worth mentioning.)

Yes indeed. I have been making pancit more often at home. Mmm.
