One of the fun things about visiting the parental abode is going through and labelling old photographs. Here I share a selection of those featuring me at various stages of my childhood.

Here I am sitting in the frame of what would become my aunt and uncle's house. I have no idea what image I was actually trying to achieve here, but I can't look at this without thinking of Heathers.

I am six. I am eating a chocolate ice lolly in 35 C heat. It appears not to have been the tidiest experience.

I think this was at Knotts Berry Farm on a trip to California? My dad and me were some pretty cool dudes, let me tell you.

Me with my viola before a high school Christmas concert. SO MUCH HAIR.
AND FINALLY. The crowning glory.

My Halloween costume in 1991. Hashtag dyinggg.

I remember piano a lot better even though I practised less, which is always a little weird to me.

Sadly one of the questions I find myself asking is, "...I thought I needed to lose weight? Really, self? *sigh*"

I have a certain fondness for viola - I played it in school orchestra, although all my lessons were for violin, and my exams were for violin. I have one that I pick up now and then, but I can't bring myself to do the hours of practice that would bring me back up to the level I want to be.

I enjoyed the viola. It was a lot lower pressure playing it in the orchestra. There were only two of us and I was the second. I had so much other stuff going on to be competitive about that it was nice to have something to be chilled out about doing.
I don't actually own one any more. I admire your commitment to at least occasional practice.

And right now, I've allowed myself to not cut my fingernails to playing length for the first time in a decade, and I'm kind of enjoying the length! But I'll get back to it.

Pretty sure I have the cello version of that viola pic. Long hair and all - I remember trying lots of products for curly hair, when really, it curled just fine by itself.

*high-fives* for curly-haired orchestral instrument players all around. :D

I think you might enjoy a sampling of my spouse's family's postcards from a similar era!

And yes, yes I did enjoy those, very much. Thanks for sharing them. I especially loved the dinosaur-tagged ones.

I really like the viola and costume pics. Do you still play?
