Whitby Abbey, 2021-12-30

On the first full day of our trip to Whitby, we made our first pilgrimage to the ruins of the Abbey. Because ELDERGOTHS. (Well, me and sister-out-law, anyway.)


The approach: 199 steps to Whitby Abbey. Every 10 steps is marked with a roman numeral.


Striking views of Whitby Pier are available from the steps.


Photography in the adjacent church graveyard is forbidden. Oops. [I failed to read the sign on entry!]


Blissfully ignorant verboten photo.


Last forbidden photo of Keiki running up the path, with our destination towering over us. Even after the 199 steps!


Swapped to the telephoto, because you don’t need much imagination to picture a vampire in the throes of pure bloodlust smashing through that window.


Most of the next dozen or so photos are just me being enraptured by these stunning ruins.

We needed to investigate ponds and things as well.


There was a large stone thingum to be sat upon, for instance.

Thingum-sitting failed to get old for quite some time.


Thingum-standing was also quite popular, due to the fight with the wind you had to have to stay upright. Keiki is of the philosophy that if you scream determinedly enough at something, it cannot hurt you.


I mean it really is a phenomenal piece of architecture.

We spent about four hours there. I thought for sure at least one child would get bored, but they loved it.

I've been visiting Whitby for 40-something years and had managed not to notice that photography is banned in the cemetery.

I think it's probably aimed at preventing lengthy goth photoshoots rather than casual tourist snaps, heh.

Yes, that would make sense! I think most of the photos I've taken there have been of birds.

Yes! We were so lucky, the forecast had predicted rain for our entire visit and instead it was clear and warm (for January).

It's a great place and you got some smashing photos - especially the graveyard. I would have headed right there (as I have a fascination for gravestones) and probably missed the sign, too :)

Thank you! It was a tiny sign, and to be fair I'm pretty sure it's just meant to stop the languishing goth photo shoots.

Thank you for sharing these lovely photos. It looks like it was a wonderful bright winter's day. Isn't there a whalebone arch in the town? Or am I mixing that up with another place?

There is a whalebone arch, near the beach! It was only about 100 metres from our guest house.

Thank you. Considering I was there in 1976, I guess you could say that that local sight really stuck with me! I remember that whole part of England as beautiful.
