A bit of both, I think: you can buy groceries without knowing that the cashier is extremely worried about pocket gophers, or live down the block from someone without learning that they think Laura Ingalls Wilder or Czar Nicholas II was the messiah, and the the person runs for mayor with that as a major part of his platform....
