Until today, I had never dyed my own hair. My hair has been green, blue and purple. I've had synthetic locks, real locks [see icon], and real locks with synth locks tied in. There have been periods where I went to the hairdresser religiously for months, and I've also gone years without bothering to do anything at all with my hair apart from wash it regularly. When I've wanted it, I've always had the luxury of being able to pay professionals to colour and style my hair. It's a treat to go to a salon, especially now that I have children, as it's two to three hours I get to myself at a weekend every couple of months.

Obviously this isn't possible under the current circumstances. I colour my hair regularly now that I have a significant amount of grey, and because my last appointment was in January, my roots were getting quite obvious. So the bloke picked up some hair dye for me when he went to the shop today. He didn't have much choice, but since we're not going into the office at the moment, he got me an exciting electric red. Or at least it was on the box. As you can see above, my hair - at least the part that's not grey - is extremely dark. So the colour took variably, shall we charitably say.

I'm pretty sure I'll be straight back in the salon once it re-opens. It's not just the unintentional two-tone effect, it's the fact that it took me ages to apply the stuff.

To my eyes, admittedly aged and somewhat off-kilter as to colour sense, it looks like deep burgundy with black streams.

I do share your frustration with home colour kits. My white roots are now taking over from my (hairdresser-assisted for years) blonde.

Back to the Saturday chores -- be well!

The two tone effect looks totally deliberate and really cool - people pay good money for that look! It's a really good colour - I have dark hair too, and it never takes colour well. (Mostly why I'm letting it go silver now - the silver is not too bad looking, honestly.)

That's no good, that it didn't take consistently and still took far too long to arrive at that conclusion.

Did the box advertise a much more red (fire engine red?) kind of coloration?

Similar colour to my present look.

It suits you.

I've not done my own hair work for years so this is going to be.....interesting!

The darker towards the front appearance makes it look entirely deliberate. And the colour suits you.

That actually looks very good even if it didn't turn out to be the all over colour that you were hoping for.

I've been dying my own hair for a long time and it took a bit of experimentation and a bit of stubborn persistence to find a colour and brand that worked well for me and I have the opposite problem to you - light coloured hair rather than dark. I'm pretty sure that I've gone entirely grey now but my original plan of letting it all the dye grow out at that stage has been shelved because I still like having black hair enough to go through the regular process of doing the dye job.

Who knew home hair color would be a necessary peri-apocalyptic skill?

It looks to me like an intentional ombre, or what the length of mine does when I get a lot of sun. Mine doesn't go even remotely evenly and it's entirely natural.

Maybe it'll grow on you? Or maybe you'll become more skilled (by your own estimation of the results.) If ever there was a time for experimentation, it's now!
