Ah, my neck of the woods! I come from about 10 miles away in Bishop Auckland. Barney's a nice place for a wander and lunch in one of the cafes. The river is accessible if you head down the hill. It's well placed for visiting the Bowes Museum, (that's Bowes as in Bowes-Lyon, the Queen Mother's family - Victoriana and automata), also the waterfall at High Force and Raby Castle - not sure if Raby's open to visitors, we usually just watch the herds of deer in the grounds. We used to get our Christmas Tree from there when we were kids. But my favourite trip from Barney is to drive up over 'the tops', the high moors, which are beautifully desolate, and over into the Yorkshire dales.
