I highly recommend it! This is my favourite version of the recipe, though I often add a little bit of cinnamon to the 'crumbs'. Some recipes tell you to pour all the wet ingredients into the pastry first, then dump all the crumble on top, but I find the layering gives better results. (The other thing I do is make a double quantity of the crumble element and freeze the other half to use in a fruit crumble at a later date).
The first time I made it, I was a bit intimidated by the messing about with molasses and boiling water and soda, but it's pretty straightforward. If you have trouble getting molasses, you get an acceptable result with a mix of 2/3 treacle, 1/3 golden syrup, but health food shops and bigger supermarkets usually have it.
