I love the cardboard village idea! Yeah, it's a bit limiting only being able to put two large items out at once. :)
According to the English version of the game, Eki-chou-san is "Conductor Whiskers". They didn't go so much for straight Japanese-to-English translations, they made cute/terrible puns.
