Lords and ladies and champagne galore at the Royal Society soiree last night.

Tonight, the Harry Potter 7 Part 2 premiere, followed by the afterparty. (It's just too bad I can't spot celebrities to save my life.)

I feel like I should be dismissing the servants who've just brought me lunch with a languid wave of the cigarette holder in my bejeweled fingers, but instead I'm putting on a luminous blue polo shirt and heading off to be enthusiastic about science for four hours.

Perhaps not so glamourous after all.

There's obviously some kind of lifeswap going on this week. On Tuesday, I had lunch at the Army & Navy Club followed by cricket at Lords, (well, it would have been, had the batting not collapsed before I got there), and this evening I am meeting a friend for a drink at her club. I am turning into a minor character from a PG Wodehouse novel. Or, more worryingly, a Saki short story.

Fortunately, there's a long, involved and fairly incomprehensible article that needs editing to bring me back to something approaching normality.

I feel sometimes as if I'm trapped in Porterhouse Blue. Tomorrow I'll be going to a garden party at the bloke's college, where I'll probably be obliged to drink champagne. At this point, the thought is rather less appealing than it should be.

At least in the gutter I know I get a decent amount of sleep. Ugh.

I've struck it rich! Temporarily, at least. Life goes back to being ordinary next week. I'm looking forward to it.

Heard very good reports of your stand at the RS. Sadly I was too bound up in other things to go this year.

Hopefully we'll have a stand next year ourselves!

Today's the last day! To be quite honest, I'm pretty much done with the whole thing as of now.

Ooh, AstroStand. Will it be Herschel? Or Planck?

Probably Herschel. Planck would be the year after when we can actually start talking in public about cosmology.

I think the shows are quite fun, if hard work, but we usually have more than just one research group to staff the stand.

We had five research groups manning the stand. The biggest contributors were Imperial and UCL/MSSL, and it was still exhausting!

Saturday and yesterday were manic. There were no breaks in the waves of people coming through. Apparently 12,000 people came to the exhibition. They were expecting 6,000.

That's interesting... I think the weekend opening may be the key here. The last time I did it (2009) we got ~5000 through the door. 3 times that number with only a couple more days is certainly manic!

I suspect you're right about the weekend opening. There were 2800 visitors on Saturday alone.

Most of the visitors during the week were either school groups or OAPs, whereas the weekend was absolutely everybody!
