Day 332/365: I think it might be New Boiler O'Clock

I could not have made this day up.

We got up extra early because the bloke had to get the first train in to New Street so he could get to London.

I had a day full of meetings and producing documents for stressed-out academics trying to meet deadlines.

I got on the train home. The train got stuck at a station (but not on a platform) behind another train that broke down because the high winds had damaged the overhead lines. My train was a diesel so it could continue to Home Station, but it had to wait for the broken train to be removed.

We waited for two hours. My childrens' nursery and school shut, and I had to activate my emergency network to have them rescued, separately.

I was standing up. I never get a seat on this service anyway because it's rammed. I was standing with a fellow parent whose children attend my childrens' school/nursery, at least, and we kept each other's spirits up for a while. It was a long enough wait that nearby passengers joined the conversation and people started sharing food, which in British terms means that everyone was convinced the end times were at hand.

I got in, picked up the children, and came home to find...

...the boiler is broken again! Same fault. I suspect we are looking at a New Boiler Situation. :/

I was going to say: it also sounds like it is Whiskey O'Clock. Or, yes, appropriately fortified mulled wine. That sounds like an utter hell of a day.

I leave you with the tiniest possible measure of comfort: at least you are homeowners, and don't have to try to persuade the landlord to part with ££££. But very much sympathy - as you may have deduced, we went through this a few years ago, and it's just miserable.

On the other hand, when a landlord employs a professional boiler maintenance company and is prepared to listen to their professional advice, new boilers can be very quick. We have to move sooner rather than later for space reasons, but I will miss this landlord a lot.

New boiler fitting has been far less disrupting and messy than any of the repair jobs it's had over the last six years. I barely knew the fitter had been in the house (and he took in several parcels for me, and put his recyclable waste in the recycling bin, which is above and beyond and I will be writing to his company to say so).

Don't forget to claim a refund from the train company as you are entitled to!

Recommend Worcester Bosch on the boiler front.

We had to put a new one in when we moved in here.

Their Greenstar range is excellent and you can operate it via the more advanced sort of mobile.

My brand new (final adjustments happened yesterday) boiler is a Worcester Bosch Greenstar, and I am in love with it so far.

Now that really is a crap day! I hope today has been a lot smoother and the next repair to your boiler is a permanent fix. That boiler of yours sounds very temperamental!

The small upside to shelling out for a new one is that the efficiency improves exponentially over a decade so you'll at least be getting a lower fuel bill in the long run.

Not that it helps in December when it doesn't work, of course.

It's true- the Greenstar we put in when we moved here has cut heating bills by around a third so the initial outlay is soon repaid. :o)

This sounds like it was an immensely stressful day and I am glad it is over with and that the kiddos were safely tended to. Sorry about the boiler situation...but you've tried to make it last as long as you could, sounds like.

Wow, what a day. And also, hopefully, there was a good drink involved and no talkback about the need for a new boiler.

Omg what a horrid day. I hope you can get a new boiler quickly. Warmth is a very good Christmas present.

Ugh. That's an awful day to have. I hope there was something warm and/or alcoholic for you to drink and that shopping for a new boiler is achieved quickly.
