Day 294/365: Climbing Wall Birthday Party: Success

We spent the entire day preparing food, cakes, and party bags for, and then attending/catering, Humuhumu's birthday party. It was at the local clip 'n' climb wall, and I think I can safely say it was a resounding success for her and her buddies. There was a competition to find four stickers placed around the walls. Humuhumu found two of them and one of her non-school mates, who is also very athletic, found the other two.

The main thing I learnt is that I have given birth to two of them. I turned my back on Keiki for about a second and this happened.


Keiki, about a third of the way up "Amaze-ing". Apparently he got fed up with waiting for me to help him and decided to go for it.

My hair might as well just all turn white now.

I have one tip.

If a kid climbs far out of reach in a public area, shake your head, say "WHERE IS THAT CHILD'S MOTHER!?" very loudly, and then walk away. Nobody will know it's you.

It's my second best young-child tip! (The first best is "If your child draws on themself with markers, don't try to wash it off. It won't wash. Instead, get some more markers and go to town. Then, if anybody says anything, stand up straight, look down your nose, and say 'I don't have to justify my art to you.'")

Younger kids, man! At least with mine, L was never particularly adventurous, so O didn't have someone athletic to keep up with. XP

It was excellent.

Yes, they were not sure about letting him have a go because he's only just big enough for the harnesses. But he turned his biiiiig brown eyes on them and they relented.

I didn't see that he was clipped/harnessed when I first saw the photo, and so was kind of astounded at how calm (even in retrospect) you seemed about it.

Things make a good deal more sense now!

Those are gorgeous climbing walls, very different from the usual kind that look like bubblegum stuck on the wall.

I think these clip-n-climb places are relatively new? The old-style gyms still exist - the routes in these are a lot easier for little people, though.

I've seen them around. They've been showing up at fairs for years. Thing is, a majority use the little bolt-on blobs originally designed for rock climbers. Those are great, but you wind up with walls that all look the same. I've seen a few alternative designs -- one looked like picture frames. I think it's cool to see more variety, and I assume it is more interesting to climb also.

Also look at it this way: If you go white, you can try all sorts of hair dye colors without having to bleach your hair. ;)

It's not actually her birthday yet. It happens during her half-term break, though, so we wanted to have her party early enough that her friends could attend - lots of people go away over half-terms.

YES I am totally looking forward to my hair turning white for EXACTLY that reason. :D :D I've always had such dark hair that dyeing it any other colour than "even darker" meant seriously damaging my hair.
