I enjoyed this post very much! One of my goals for this year (not resolutions, because I don't make those anymore) is to cook for other people more, because I could have turned my second bedroom into an office/gaming room when I moved in but I didn't, I turned it into a dining room, and I like my dining table too much to get rid of it now.
I was a terrible cook until I discovered two things:
1. BBC Good Food '101' cookbooks; 2. The fact that all cooking is just putting stuff in things and waiting. Sometimes poking with a spoon.
#2 sounds laughably basic but I started out with excessively lofty ambitions and intimidated myself looking at recipes for which, to be honest, life is really much too short unless one is getting paid to cook them. I mean, what average person actually needs to make their own béarnaise sauce. Come on.
I still have major issues with #4 when I think about cooking for other people, which is why my dining table thinks it's an oversized cat perch—the cats will think this regardless—but I should really just get over it, because if I can make an enjoyable meal that provides three portions of leftovers for me, then I can probably stand to give those three portions to other people while I eat mine.
