It seems very probable that they might have been told to change their names to something English. All of my Filipino relatives' Anglicised names are wrong - either incomplete, or altered entirely on moving to the USA, to make them easily pronounced by English speakers. I have never attempted to retrace my ancestry, but I just know that if I ever try, that alone will make it a nightmare.
